Looking at the people who come top of the pile in terms of strength, performance and physique, you’d be incorrect for thinking if you want to lose fat, get lean, or even build muscle, you have to specialize in one particular type of training.
And when I say specialize I mean sticking to just to one form of exercise and spending all your time focusing your efforts on one goal and one form of training (eg: the gym).
They say variety is the spice of life, and this is very true than when talking about training.
One of the main reasons people start skipping workouts, fall back into old habits and then give up on training altogether is due to boredom.
You might not love every single type of training you try, but if you feel like you’re stuck in a rut, and that you’re starting to be incredibly unmotivated going into a session, then switching things up, or even adding in something new could be hugely beneficial.
Then there’s the added bonus of an adaptive response. The more you do something, the more your body gets used to it. Remember the first time you did something different? How you couldn’t walk for a week, and would crawl down every flight of stairs you came across?
The idea of “keeping your muscles guessing” doesn’t hold much weight, but you can certainly reap the rewards of challenging your body with a new stimulus. That’s why at Bondi Vixen we offer so many different modalities to train the body. From Sandbags to Boxing, from Kettlebells to Kickboxing, from Power Pilates to RunClub. We cover EVERY modality even in regards to types of methods used within each modality. Your body has to constantly work hard to cope with the demand…hence such good results so quick!
The same principles apply to losing fat. If you’ve hit a wall on your quest for abs or sculpted glutes, then perhaps a new challenge is just what the doctor ordered.
Adding ALL Vixen classes to your weekly schedule to keep your body guessing and even adding in a personal training session once a fortnight can give you the motivation and the physical motivation to smash through a fat loss plateau.
Feeling sore, stiff and about as mobile as a wooden board?
Then it’s a decent bet that a weekly Yoga or Pilates class would do you the world of good. These may not be the most calorie-intensive forms of training, but both are seriously under-rated for improving your recovery. Anyone with any goal can benefit from more mobility training.
Another thing to think about is that fat loss can be stressful on your body. If in a calorie deficit combined with training hard, your body will go into efficiency mode, whereby it tries to preserve calories, by lowering metabolic rate, and down-regulating certain hormonal processes. Additionally, stress levels can go through the roof. Yoga and Pilates can help you chill out, reduce your cortisol levels, make you feel healthier and happier, and give you fat loss a serious boost in the right direction.
Now one thing I am an advocate for is having fun as part of the concept with training. Sure getting results is ultimately what it’s all about, but there’s no reason whatsoever why you can’t enjoy the process and like what you do. It makes it a whole lot easier to wake up at the crack of dawn to get to a class when you know you are going to have a good laugh too!
